The Fairfield Beautification Commission is delighted to announce that Sarah and Steve Alderfer, of 803 South D Street in Fairfield, have been selected as the recipients of the Rose Award for Excellence in Landscaping.
Since becoming homeowners in 2015, Sarah and Steve have transformed their property into an incredibly beautiful garden. Building on the foundation laid by previous owner Lee Gobble, the Alderfers have enhanced the garden with a vibrant array of bold, colorful perennials and thoughtfully selected trees.
What first drew the Alderfers to the home was its unique seclusion and outstanding yard. The front of the house, shaped like the bow of a ship, features large windows that overlook the expansive greens of the golf course. Dwarf Alberta spruce evergreens frame the front steps, with flower beds nestled in between. These beds burst with a rich variety of blooms, including rare perennials such as dog fennel, bear’s breeches, and snow-on-the-mountain (Euphorbia).
Their love for nature extends throughout the property. To the east, a charming fountain is surrounded by a serene grove of evergreens, Green Giant Arborvitae, and birch trees, creating a peaceful sanctuary. They also enriched their landscape with the addition of trees like the Tulip Tree, generously provided by the Department of Natural Resources.
Strolling through the Alderfers’ gardens is a true delight. Their property uniquely balances a feeling of seclusion — nestled in natural beauty — with the openness of sweeping views across the golf course. It’s a place that evokes tranquillity and admiration.
Congratulations to Sarah and Steve Alderfer for cultivating such a serene and beautiful haven, and for their well-deserved recognition with the Rose Award for Excellence in Landscaping!
