Saying goodbye is always bittersweet

The month of May is sadly passing us by quickly. I say sad because it means we are approaching the graduations of our senior pages. This year, Gwen Flannery, Karmen Knipfer and Mallory Madison will be receiving their diplomas. These girls are involved in many other activities and maintain busy schedules, but they all come to the library and do an excellent job. They bring a smile and youthful energy every time they come in to work their shifts. It has been a pleasure to get to know this group of young women and watch them grow in the library. We can't thank them enough for all they have done to keep the library going.

As hard as it is to say goodbye, we know other wonderful opportunities await them. We have watched many library pages leave here to go on to successful careers. The group includes engineers, teachers, a chef, accountants, bankers, a Chicago theatre manager, a lawyer, a writer, a music therapist, a few who went on to get a Masters in library science, and many more wonderful career paths still to be chosen. We are so grateful when any of them come into the library to catch us up on where they are in life. These kids become a part of your life and we want nothing but the best for them.

As graduation ceremonies and festivities begin, we congratulate all of the library pages who have been a part of the Washington Public Library staff. Thanks for all the good memories you left us. You were the best, always leading by example. We know our current pages will continue to do well, and will grow in their jobs at the library, having been a part of such a positive group of teenage staff.

Let the tears begin!
