AMES ? Many parents report feeling rushed, stressed and unable to do everything they have to do at work and at home. However, parents don?t have to live with constant chaos if they take care of themselves first, say the Science of Parenting bloggers from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
?In an emergency on an airplane, the first rule is to put on your own oxygen mask before you help anyone else. Only when we first help ourselves can we effectively help others. That?s true in parenting, too,? said Janet Smith, a human sciences specialist in family life.
?Caring for yourself is one of the most important ? and most often forgotten ? things you can do as a parent,? added Lori Hayungs, also a human sciences specialist in family life.
?When you take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally, it is easier to be a positive, loving parent and do all you need to do to care for your child,? Hayungs said.
Parents who have a social network and solid support in times of need are better able to provide safe environments and nurturing experiences for their children. During November Smith and Hayungs will blog about strategies to balance parenting demands with work, play and personal lives.
?We will explore ways to prioritize parenting responsibilities and avoid parenting stress. We also will share ideas on fun breaks you can take that will refresh your parenting ability,? Smith said.
Learn more from tips on the blog throughout the month and in a four-minute podcast.
