Scribblers September meeting minutes

Scribblers met at the home of Marilyn Vincent on Monday, Sept. 17, with Valerie Kreutner co-hosting. Twelve members and one guest, Donna Huston, were present.
President Karen Osborn called the business meeting to order. The June minutes were read and approved, with the correction of Mary Shy being recording secretary instead of Martha Wiley. The treasurer gave a report of the balance in the treasury. No new business was discussed.
Upon the business meeting being adjourned, the program was shared writings. Claudia Streeter had given an assignment in May, using words from word finds to create a poem or story. Each member was also given the name of a well-known person. The assignment was to do some research, then write a short report explaining the 'secrets of their greatness.”
Mary Ann Freeland shared a poem, titled 'Growing Tomatoes” while Martha Wiley read from the 1972 anthology. Ann Porter shared 'Lessons Learned,” dealing with the bad storm the south part of Mt. Pleasant experienced in August.
A piece narrating a walk, on which she discovered a beautiful tree in Forest Home Cemetery, was read by Kathy Wiley. It was titled 'Tree Thoughts on Equality.”
Guest Donna Huston read a short story with a surprising twist called 'Once Upon a Valentine.”
Sharing three selections based on the assignment, Marilyn Vincent read 'Vampire,” 'Mobster History,” and 'Ancient Skills.”
Member Rita Davis wrote an account of an unusual trip taking a friend to the airport. She also shared some important facts about Corrie Ten Boom.
Valerie Kreutner shared 'My Two Cents,” with some good food for thought, and the poem 'Sounds.”
A poem, 'A View from My Porch,” was written by Karen Osborn. She shared some interesting facts about her well-known person, Elizabeth Blackwell, a female pioneer in the medical field.
Sharing a journal excerpt from a new journal, dated June 1, 2005, was Waunita Hobbie.
Claudia Streeter read 'The Life Aquatic,” which dealt with exercising in the pool, with the advice to 'keep moving.”
Gerri Dean read an interesting account of Florence Nightingale.
Next month the group will meet with Mary Shy, on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. with Mary Ann Freeland acting as co-hostess.
