I had the privilege to watch a recent rehearsal of Shrek the Musical at our Washington Community Theater. Having loved the Shrek movies myself, I was anxious to see Shrek and the other fairy-tale characters come to life.
The actors of all ages are filling the stage with fantasy, great singing and humor! If you have seen the Shrek movies then you know the type of humor that makes this an endearing show (rated PG).
Shrek, played by local veteran actor Vern Miller, embodies every detail of the beloved ogre. Nikkie Frederick, ?Fiona,? is pure joy on the stage. She is funny and sarcastic and brings her character to life through her acting and beautiful singing. Farquaad played by Johnny Shang is remarkable as he performs his entire role on his knees. Wait, have I given away a secret? But, for me, the standout is ?Donkey,? played by the young actor Logan Hanson. He is the quintessential sidekick to Shrek and is so good in his role.
All characters seen to have been perfectly cast. Even the youngest of the crew are engaging and fill the stage with their personas. The Mad-Hatter, Humpty-Dumpty, the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Blind Mice, and many other beloved fairy-tale characters are all there. Pinocchio (Andy Jeffrey) deserves special mention.
If you have not purchased your tickets for this production, do so immediately. It will leave you laughing and proud of our community theater here in Washington.
