Sister Marie Vittetoe to be honored
DAVENPORT ? The Congregation of the Humility of Mary will celebrate the Jubilees of seven vowed sisters and one CHM Associate at a special Mass of celebration at Christ the King Chapel, St. Ambrose University Campus in Davenport, on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. Rev. DAVENPORT ? The Congregation of the Humility of Mary will celebrate the Jubilees of seven vowed sisters and one CHM Associate at a special Mass of celebration at Christ the King Chapel, St. Ambrose University Campus in Davenport, on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at 2 p.m. Rev. Chuck Adams and The Rev. Msgr. Francis Henricksen will preside at the liturgy honoring the following Jubilarians.
A celebration also will be held at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Our Lady of Peace Chapel, in Johnston, Iowa, on Saturday Sept. 24, at 9:30 a.m., for Sister Marie Vittetoe (Mary Bernard). She will celebrate 70 years as a nun.
Vittetoe was born in Keota, and entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1946. Her first vows were pronounced in 1949.
Vittetoe received a bachelor?s in medical technology from the former Marycrest College in Davenport, a master?s in medical technology education and a doctorate in higher education administration from West Virginia University in Morgantown. She worked as a medical technologist in St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa and also taught in the St. Joseph School of Nursing and in the Ottumwa School of Medical Technology. She was assistant professor and division chair of the health occupations teacher education program in the College of Education at the University of Illinois from 1973-78. She was department chair and professor of clinical laboratory sciences at the University of Kentucky College of Allied Health Professions from 1978-94. She was a Project HOPE volunteer consultant for the University of Haiti Medical Technology Program in Port au Prince, and later to many Haitian and other Caribbean labs, especially to Hopital Sacre Coeur in Milot, Haiti.
Currently, Vittetoe calls Iowa City her home where she is active in a communications ministry and Haiti Advocacy.
