Southeast Iowa Sierra Club's Fall Tree Giveaway Project concluded Oct. 10 when 20 applicants picked up their native oak trees.
Spearheaded by Steve Taylor, a horticulturist and executive committee member of the local Sierra club, and assisted by Chett Breed and Michael Halley, the project required applicants to have an appropriate site for a large tree and to commit to the necessary care of the young tree.
The Sierra Club will continue to support the city of Fairfield's efforts to beautify the city while improving the environment. Native trees answer this need in many ways: they provide shade, sequester carbon in significant amounts and provide habitat for insects, birds and animals, to list but a few.
On Wednesday, Nov. 18, the Sierra Club is sponsoring 'Blowing in the Wind”, a Zoom talk by Michael Moore of Fairfield who has worked in the wind energy sector for 15 years in nine states and two Canadian provinces. Michael's experience and knowledge of wind energy should prove interesting to many in Fairfield concerned with climate issues. For more information, email mikemoore@lisco.com.
