The Sheila and Scott Clements family of Fairfield will be accepting donations for the Special Olympics Iowa Scarf Project through Dec. 1.
The Scarf Project?s goal is to give knitters and crocheters the power to support and help create a sense of unity, support and community for the athletes and the Special Olympics movement as a whole. The knitted and crocheted scarves, hats, mittens or earmuff headbands will be given out to athletes to help them keep warm during the Winter Games in January.
This year?s colors for the scarves, hats, mittens and headbands are Red Heart yarn Royal Blue No. 0385 and Bright Yellow No. 0324. Any pattern can be used.
The idea for a scarf project resulted from an opportunity to provide a gift of welcome for the athletes of the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho. A call went out for 5,000 Red Heart delft blue and white scarves, and nearly 60,000 scarves arrived from every state in the U.S. and 12 countries around the world.
Following the success of the scarf project for the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games, many states, including Iowa, have started scarf projects.
