Star gazing, canoeing set at Jefferson County Park

Several programs, focusing on the stars and canoeing, are planned for August by the staff of Jefferson County Park.
Summer assistant Brittney Fry will be leading the Star Gazing/Meteor Shower program Friday.
Participants should meet at 9 p.m. at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center.
Fry said participants should bring bug spray, a lawn chair and binoculars, and come prepared for a little hiking as there will be an uphill hike to the darkest part of the park.
The program is free, and no registration is required.
In the event of rain, the program will be rescheduled for 9 p.m. Saturday.
A Canoe Basics for Beginners class is set from 9:30 a.m. to noon Monday for students going into sixth grade or above who are new to canoeing or for those wanting to review.
The class will introduce participants to canoe basics, followed by time in the pond to practice various paddling techniques, plus a few games to help develop skills.
Preregistration is required by calling 472-4421 or emailing therse@jeffersoncountyconservation.com. The class is limited to 16. The cost is $2. Interested parents can register and participate with their son or daughter at no cost.
A trip, Paddling the Skunk, is set from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday for youth in sixth grade or above who have some canoeing experience.
This is a chance for new canoers to practice their skills and experienced canoers to paddle the Skunk River.
Participants should bring sunscreen, bug spray, lunch and water, and wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. More details will be provided after registration.
Pre-registration required. The fee is $5. Parents are welcome to register and participate with their son or daughter at no cost. Space is limited.
