If you love to eat, like to cook, enjoy learning new things and appreciate lively, lighthearted company, treat yourself to attending the free, monthly “Great Taste” event at Green Building Supply, hosted by Fairfield resident, Steve Boss.
Here’s what to expect: you arrive a little before 7:00 pm. The show is recorded so it’s good to be on time. Take your number for the door prize drawings and find a seat. Typically there is a sample appetizer and/or beverage being served while the audience assembles. To begin, Steve introduces the guest(s) for the evening and in a combination interview/demonstration they prepare the dish(es) of the evening before your very eyes. Questions and answers follow, small tastings are served and the door prize fun begins–all in a friendly, casual atmosphere.
This event has been happening, in one form or another, for about 18 years. The purpose of the show is to bring people opportunities to expand their own home cooking, with a focus on using fresh, whole local ingredients and supporting local growers. Guests have included local and regional chefs, home cooks, farmers, value-added businesses, cookbook authors and multiple others.
Steve’s food odyssey began as a young person modeling after his mother and grandmother, both skillful cooks. He made his own breakfasts at an early age and later, in the Scouts, he learned how to cook over a campfire. In high school and college, he worked in an Italian restaurant, doing everything there is to do in an establishment which prepared their own sauces and pasta from scratch.
In his career, Steve had opportunities to travel widely in the U.S. and many European countries. His employer loved fine dining and ushered him into the delights of that world. At one point, Steve worked for a company which imported food products from Italy. In that capacity, Steve was exposed to small-scale organic farmers, forging friendships which remain to this day. Such varied experiences gave him an even richer appreciation for the entire food landscape, or “Foodverse,” as he sometimes calls it.
Steve’s philosophy is that food should be fun. He says, “One of the great things about eating is that it’s so key to our overall mental, physical and spiritual health. Because our society is so busy most people don’t look at food from that crucial vantage point or realize what a pivotal role food really does play in our enjoyment of life.” Steve wants people to feel that their knowledge and creativity can increase by attending the show and practicing at home some of the things which are presented.
He’s been rewarded to witness how much people enjoy Great Taste and how many folks return every month. It takes place on the second Tuesday evening of the month and is announced via email and posters around Fairfield. To sign up for notifications, email Steve at sboss@me.com.
The next Great Taste is Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., at Green Building Supply and features Nanette Schoenewe, Head Chef at Everybody’s Cafe, focusing on a Southern theme and highlighting Anne Byrn’s new book, “Baking in the American South.”
Sponsors are Green Building Supply and Everybody’s Whole Foods.
