Washington County Extension & Outreach continues its school enrichment program Pick a Better Snack in unique ways this year in regards to COVID safety.
Once a month, Amy Green, Washington County 4-H/Youth Coordinator, meets via Zoom with Stewart Elementary kindergarteners, first graders and Mid-Prairie East Elementary second graders.
Lessons started in November stressing the importance of being brave to try new things. All students were able to learn about sugar snap peas – they grow, where they grow, how to eat them, and they were able to taste them with samples.
The December lessons focused on sweet bell peppers. The majority of students in all grade levels selected red bell peppers as their favorite after a taste test. First and second grade students also reviewed and practiced good hand washing techniques by observing how simulations germs (GloGerm) hid even after good handwashing and drying. Students took signs home to remind their families the importance of proper handwashing.
The Mid Prairie Pick a Better Snack program is supported by Mid-Prairie Boosters. Stewart Elementary' s program is funded by Washington County Riverboat Foundation grant.
