Students receive VFW scholarships

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sponsors a scholarship program every year called Voice of Democracy. The aim for this program is to promote patriotism and national pride. There are local, district, state, and national awards. The first-place national winner receives a $30,000 scholarship.

The VFW does not promote or encourage war. Members are dedicated to serving veterans who have been in harm's way. The goal is to help maintain the rights they have earned and assist them when they are in need.

Mr. Van Weelden graciously used this opportunity as an assignment in his American government class at Washington High School. The theme this year was "Why I'm Optimistic about Our Nation's Future."

Three students were awarded with scholarships: third place, Mackenzie Miller, $25; second place, Marisa Powers, $50; and first place, Caitlin Yeggy, $100. Caitlin was also the District 1 winner and runner-up at the state level.
