The Fairfield Public Library announces the opening event of the 2009 summer reading program.
The summer reading program?s theme this year is ?Be Creative @ Your Library? for children in preschool through third grade. For the older children in grades 4-7, the theme is ?Express Yourself @ Your Library.?
The program kickoff will be from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday. The street in front of the library will be blocked off so those attending can enjoy a bouncing room castle, face painting, helium balloons, a raffle every 15 minutes, the Friends of the Library book sale, registration for the summer reading program, registration for other county agency summer programs, creating collage art and other activities.
The summer reading program is a time during the summer months where libraries throughout the United States promote and nurture reading for their young patrons. Fairfield Public Library?s reading program will begin with the kickoff Saturday and run six weeks until July 18. The program will include programming four days each week, including Toddler Time, Preschool Storytime and programs on Tuesday and Wednesday for children going into kindergarten through seventh grade.
Some of the scheduled programs include drama workshops with Desmond Garrett, drumming with Fonsica, fish painting, creating duct tape wallets, a family night with Fax Gilbert and a talent show entitled ?Fairfield?s Got Talent.?
Children can choose a prize for every hour they are read to or read themselves.
For information about the kickoff event or the reading program events, call or e-mail Patti Soderberg, youth services librarian at 472-6551 or psoderberg@fairfield.lib.ia.us or visit the librarian?s web page at www.fairfield.lib.ia.us.
