Nine out of 10 older Americans have high blood pressure. In fact, it?s so common that some people think it?s a normal part of aging.
High blood pressure can contribute to conditions like strokes and heart attacks. Simple lifestyle habits can lower the risk and keep blood pressure in check resulting in better energy and well-being.
Experts are finding that adding more potassium-rich foods (such as avocado, spinach, squash and apricots) to the diet can help lower blood pressure.
Learn more about the benefits of potassium by attending April?s Fresh Conversations program to be held on April 19, at the Fellowship Cup, located at 203 North Jefferson St., in Mt. Pleasant, at 11 a.m.
People attending are invited to check out the congregate meal center and take part in the meal services. The program will include a discussion on how to design simple snacks that incorporate easy-to-eat fruits or vegetables. Balancing intake with potential medications will also be featured.
Participants will sample various greens with a refreshing vinaigrette dressing.
Only one in 10 Iowans eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. With garden season just around the corner, the presenter will discuss ideas for planting greens and other produce, or buying it locally so it can be enjoyed at peak freshness.
New members are welcome and new sites are added periodically. Fresh Conversations is a free program offered by Milestones Area Agency on Aging at their nutrition centers and designed to promote sharing and peer support. The monthly nutrition discussions, in-home exercise and food samplings can help seniors stay independent and healthy.
