COON RAPIDS, MN - The Iowa Wesleyan football team showed there is more to IW Football than just playing the game. For the second straight year, the Tigers joined Feed My Starving Children to pack meals with the organization.
Nearly 65 players, coaches, and managers joined approximately 30 other individuals at the Feed My Starving Children facility on Friday, Nov. 9, 2018. The group put together 'Manna packs” which are a mixture of vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice.
When asked about the project, coach Mike Richtman had the following to say, 'There are tremendous benefits for our players to participate in a service project like this. It is a great team bonding experience and it helps them to expand their worldview and recognize the challenges faced around the world. It is also consistent with our University values of service and community.”
In a two-hour time period, the group of around 100 people packed a total of 45,000 meals. This is the equivalent of feeding 124 children one meal a day for a year.
Richtman continued, 'Ultimately I want their experience with IW football to be about more than just football. We want all our players to be good citizens and community members and this is a great way to build that.”
Feed My Starving Children is a Christian organization and at the end of the experience, the group gathered around the pallets of meals and prayed for those who will be receiving the meals.
