The Iowa Wesleyan women outshot Eureka 29-7 overall and 18-2 in the second half and overtime on Wednesday afternoon, but the Tigers couldn?t send in the winning goal and had to settle for a 1-1 tie in double-overtime.
Eureka was dangerously short-handed with only seven total players in the game, but all players dropped back on defense for the majority of the contest.
In the first half, IWU outshot the Red Devils, 11-5, but couldn?t put the ball in the net until Cicily Herby drew a penalty shot in the 32nd minute.
Herby beat the Eureka keeper to a ball that settled just inside the box and a Red Devil defender had no choice but to pick up a foul and give IWU a penalty shot. Herby crushed the ball into the upper-right corner and the Tigers led, 1-0.
IWU held the lead until the second half, where Eureka struck in the 60th minute.
Eureka?s Lexi Marselle took the ball from her defensive position and pushed it up the far side of the field, avoiding Tiger after Tiger on her way towards the net. She earned a one-on-one with keeper Caitlin O?Neill and snuck it past her for the equalizing goal.
After the tying goal was scored, the IWU offense went back to work, holding the ball on the offensive side for the vast majority of the second half and the two overtime periods, but the Tigers couldn?t break through and the game ended in a tie.
IWU did snap a 13-game losing streak and moved to 0-13-1 on the season. They now sit at 0-5-1 in SLIAC play. They will be back in action at Greenville on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m.
