The Maharishi University of Management Department of Sustainable Living is hosting a public awareness event on ?Truth in Labeling Genetically Engineered Food? at 8 p.m. Saturday at Dalby Hall on the M.U.M. campus.
The event will include a coalition of farmers, doctors, whole food manufacturers and distributors, whole food retailers and coops and concerned citizens.
Chris Wege, president of Citizens for Labeling Genetically Engineered Food, is helping organize the event.
?Both government and media funded surveys indicate that 90 percent of Americans, when clearly informed, insist on labeling of such substances in their food. In discussions of this issue, most people are dumbfounded to hear that our government is not already requiring such labeling and human health testing, as well as testing for environmental impact,? he said.
The Truth in Labeling Coalition is calling on the talent and knowledge of a lobbying firm in Washington, D.C., comprised of former four-term congressman Jim Bates and his partner, Christopher ?Kip? Byrne.
Speakers will include Bates, Wege and Derek and Nancy Casady, general managers of the San Diego People?s Ocean Beach Organic Food Coop.
