Jim and Ann Williams planted a tree near the newly constructed pavilion on the UP Home Campus in memory of long-time friend, Bob Logan. The Black Gum tree is a hearty species with brilliant red, fall color and should grow into a beautiful canopy to compliment the pavilion.
Gene and Judy Driscoll had friends, Lanny and Susan Little, from Bonita Springs, Fla., spend a three-day weekend with them.
Esther Hess spent a long weekend with friends near the Quad Cities. Esther lived in Moline, Ill., before moving to the United Presbyterian Home. Esther reports that it was good to see old friends and take in the beautiful fall colors along the way and in their back yard.
Cottagers met on Monday evening, Oct. 27, in the Campus Center for their monthly potluck. Serving committee members were Larry and Sara Bartlett, Dick and Betty Colby, and Mary Temple. Sara and Larry decorated the tables in a beautiful fall theme. Dick Colby offered the prayer after which Betty Colby announced the eating order. Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal and socializing. Brynn and Luke Beenblossom attended with Grandma Betty Beenblossom. Dick and Jan Gallagher attended as guests of Ted Stewart. Ted introduced Dick Gallagher as the speaker for the evening. Dick spoke of his family farming operation and told why crops are rotated each year as can be seen in the fields to the south of the UPH Campus. It was also Dick and Jan?s wedding anniversary and the group thanked the couple for celebrating with them at the potluck. Next month?s potluck will be held on Monday, Nov. 24.
A display of Sarah Hana's art work is up in the UPH Gallery. Sarah works mostly in watercolors. Her exhibit shows how hard, steady work really pays off. The show will be up through November. Treat yourself to a visit.
Up with Day Care children were aided by residents on Monday to carve out pumpkins in preparation of the upcoming Halloween holiday. There was a morning and afternoon session to accommodate all the children and their pumpkins. The carved fruits ranged from silly faces, vampires, scary witches and faces with braces. The children enjoyed the process and residents enjoyed watching them pull out pumpkin guts, some even taste testing the insides. They separated the seeds for roasting later.
Following the pumpkin carving, Health Center residents prepared treat bags for trick-or-treaters on Friday.
Classics Et Cetera for Thursday, Oct. 30, included the overture to ?Brother Devil? by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber; 2nd Movement of the String Quintet in E Minor by Luigi Boccherini; ?The Sorcerer?s Apprentice? by Paul Dukas; Selections from Act II of ?Swan Lake? by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky; ?Funeral March of a Marionette? by Charles Gounod.
Paul Dukas (1865-1935), is known almost solely for his ?The Sorcerer?s Apprentice? that was featured in Walt Disney?s 1940 film ?Fantasia? starring Mickey Mouse as the apprentice who was not able to stop his water-carrying brooms from causing a flood. The deluge was finally terminated upon the return of the sorcerer. Dukas, a perfectionist, refused to publish any of his works that he felt were less than his best, and just before his death he destroyed all of his unpublished manuscripts.
