Esther Bordwell hosted the Creative Living Department of Fortnightly for lunch last Thursday in the Main Dining Room with her daughter and son-in-law, Bob and Millie Youngquist, as guests. Millie and Bob are retired music teachers from the WACO and Washington school districts respectively and have moved on to other endeavors. The duo graciously presented an afternoon vocal music concert for Fortnightly members and UP Home residents.
WACO Middle School students volunteered at the United Presbyterian Home on Friday as part of their Friday Enrichment Program. They aided residents with computer work, read to residents, played cards with others and helped out in the day care. They were very busy and everyone appreciated their time and efforts.
Up with Day Care children decorated Easter eggs with the help of residents on Monday in preparation of the upcoming holiday. An Easter buffet will be held in the Main Dining Room on Sunday.
There was a lively bunch of bidders in the Main Dining Room on Wednesday for an old fashioned Box Lunch Social. The United Presbyterian Home?s NuStepping to end ALZ team of Pat Jenkins, Phyllis Ladehoff, Melva Mineart and Dorothy White organized the event with the help of staff from the Wellness and Fitness Center and Dietary Services. Auctioneers Darwin Widmer and Brad Goff cried out colorful commentaries with each brightly decorated box lunch they raised for bid. While the contents of the lunch or who made it was not revealed, the fashionable containers said they were each made with love and care. There were shoe boxes decorated in purple polka dots, bags with brightly colored tissue paper, flower pot creations and Easter baskets to complement the season. Some lunches sported themes such as Spring Explosion, Filled with Love and Once Upon a Time. Lunches were made by individual residents, Morrison Senior Dining, Subway Restaurant, JP?s 207 and Sweet Blessings Bakery with individual bids ranging between $16 and $80, raising the total auction funds to $898 to benefit Alzheimer?s research. Following the auction, everyone ate together and revealed the contents of their delicious lunches.
Fred Berry, chaplain with Hospice Compassus, stopped by this week for a visit. On his walk down the hallway, Rev. Berry stopped at the portrait of Jesus Christ and pointed out that his facial highlights reveal the image of the Host on his forehead and a chalice in his temple. It is easy to see once someone points it out and an appropriate observation during Holy Week.
