Remember when? A person can usually get a history lesson by visiting a retirement community or talking with members of the Greater and Silent Generations, but we are in unprecedented times. Eighty and ninety-year year-old residents of the United Presbyterian Home report that while they have seen a lot of viruses come and go, they have never seen anything like the havoc that the COVID-19 virus threat is doing to scare our local community, nation and world. Knowing that they are of the age bracket most suspectable to the virus, residents are making the most of a difficult situation. They don't appear to be fearful of the virus or the unknown. They are inquisitive and willing to do their part to combat this villain and keep it under control. They also express their gratitude freely to health care, maintenance, housekeeping, dietary and clerical staff who care for them on a daily basis.
While all activities have been halted at the UPH, friends and neighbors are finding ways to stay in touch with one another to spread positive thoughts, not germs. Thankfully we live in an age of technology that allows for face time and quick communication. Such was the case on Tuesday when Bill Dusenbery celebrated his St. Patty's day birthday. It was a jovial crew that joined him on face time to share in a little libation and to wish him a happy green birthday.
Spiritual Life Director, Andrew Zuehlke has prepared a communal prayer that staff and residents will take part in at a designated time from their individual locations. It is a sign of solidarity in a time of social distancing. We are all in this together.
