Classics Et Cetera for Thursday, Januray 16, 2020 included the overture to 'The King of Yvetot” by Adolphe Adam; 'Bella figlia dell'amore” from 'Rigoletto” by Giuseppe Verdi; 'The Bee” by Franz Anton Schubert; 'Cwm Rhondda” by The Morriston Orpheus Welsh Male Choir; 'Humorous Duet for Two Cats” by Gioachino Rossini; Numbers XVII through XXIII from 'The Enchanted Island Suite” by Arthur Sullivan; 'National Fencibles,” march by John Philip Sousa.
There once were at least two other Franz Schuberts: Franz Anton Schubert, Jr. (1808-1878), who took the name of François professionally, was a musician from Dresden, Germany, and was no relation to the famous Austrian composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Both François and his father, Franz Anton Schubert, Sr. (1768-1827), were composers and double bass players. Unlike the famous Schubert, their music is practically forgotten today except for 'L'Abeille” ('The Bee”), a piece of just over a minute in length for violin and piano by Franz Anton, Jr. It is often used as a concert encore and sometimes attributed to the wrong Schubert.
