Washington High School students taking part in the OJT program while working in the Fitness Center this year are Greta Rothe and Kasen Bailey. Both Greta and Kasen served as the Master of Ceremonies during Spirit Night, part of the homecoming festivities, making Amy Kleese a very proud supervisor. Kasen reports that the job wasn't too stressful as he opted to use a script while introducing the homecoming court. Brynn Beenblossom was a member of the WHS homecoming royalty and the granddaughter of United Presbyterian Home royalty, Betty Beenblossom.
The UP Home book club met Wednesday to discuss The American Agent by Jacqueline Winspear. This is the 16th book in the Maisie Dobbs series about a young English woman who was trained as a psychologist and investigator just after WWI. This book takes place mostly in London, during the Blitz, where Dobbs is also a volunteer ambulance driver at night. The group met on the Kerr Hall patio. Attending were Marcia Wilson, Jane Fehr, Judy Venzke, Esther Bordwell, Mary Temple, Julia Gamon, Kitch Shatzer, and Carol Ray, who led the discussion. Esther Bordwell announced that she is writing a book which is about a Japanese Foreign Exchange student who stayed with her family in the ‘50s. They have stayed in touch ever since this time and visited one another on several occasions. The next meeting will be October 28 to discuss The Library Book by Susan Orlean. Marcia Wilson will be the discussion leader.
Pat Jenkins is enthralled in a sewing project along with her granddaughter. Pat admits that she is not a seasoned seamstress but when her granddaughter showed up at her door with fabric and supplies it was hard to say no. The project involves multiple cushions for a back-porch patio. It is not a quick project but a good refresher course in sewing skills.
Flu shots were given to residents this week by appointment in order to limit the number of people gathering at any given time. It was still a social event as numerous times we overheard comments like 'I haven't seen you in a long time,” and 'It is so good to get out.” Just another sign of how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives.
