Audra Williams celebrated her birthday in the Town Center Friday morning. Audra's son and daughter-in-law Mike and Diane Williams of Camden, Missouri spent the prior two days visiting Audra.
Donna Orris enjoyed weekend visitors when her three-month-old great-grandson Milo came to visit from St. Louis, Missouri along with his parents and grandparents. Milo is the son of Max and Alisha Orris and the grandson of Tom and Mary Orris. This was the first time that Donna was able to meet and hold the newest member of her family.
Kerr Hall residents gathered in the Moore Family Dining Room on Tuesday for their monthly social lunch. Wayne and Nadene Brown served as host for the event with 22 residents attending. They enjoyed a delicious meal of ham or roast beef with all of the trimmings adding peach crisp ala mode for dessert. Many residents stayed for an afternoon of coffee and fellowship following lunch.
Bob and Millie Youngquist shared photos of their trip to Egypt taken over a year ago with residents and guests Tuesday evening as part of Julia Gamon's Fortnightly program. They found Egyptian residents friendly and very eager to share their history with visitors. Because Bob and Millie traveled in a small group, they were open to opportunities not offered to cruise ships or large groups of visitors such as riding camels and traveling the Nile River in a small boat. Their photos reflected a trip of great adventure.
The newly remodeled cottage at 38 Linden Lane was open to visitors on Wednesday offering an opportunity to view the interior and welcome potential new residents to the area. Neighbors saw the opportunity to gather outside and visit. A sure sign that spring is near.
Classics Et Cetera for March 12, 2020 included the overture to 'Jolly Robbers” by Franz von Suppé; 'Is any afflicted” & 'Emmaus” by William Billings; 'Songs My Mother Taught Me” by Antonin Dvořák, performed by Itzhak Perlman. violin; 'Souvenir d'Aix-les-Bains,” waltz by Jacques Offenbach; 'Tiger Rag” performed by Patrick Sheridan. tuba; Horn Concerto No. 1 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; 'Lullaby” by Johannes Brahms; 'March for the Sultan Abdul Medjid” by Gioachino Rossini.
In 1880, Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904) composed a set of seven songs to German or Czech texts that were published as his 'Gypsy Melodies,” Opus 55. Song No. 4 of the group has been the most popular of them: 'Songs My Mother Taught Me.” It has been recorded over the years by many famous singers, including Jeanette MacDonald, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Paul Robeson. The beloved violinist Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) transcribed the song for violin and piano and performed it frequently, as has today's Itzhak Perlman (now age 74).
