Esther Bordwell is pleased to announce the arrival of great-granddaughter, Lorelei Ruth Youngquist born Monday, April 27, 2020 to parents Mike and Heather Youngquist of Coralville, Iowa. Ted Stewart is the baby's proud great-uncle.
Mobil musician Andrew Zuehlke loaded his piano on a trailer and traveled the UPH Campus in search of an audience Wednesday afternoon stopping at various locations to sing hymns. Residents opened their windows or stepped out onto their balconies and porches to listen to the beautiful music. Some residents joined in singing and other appalled and cheered in appreciation. Andrew intends to take his show on the road again as time and weather permit.
Up with Day Care kids brought bikes and trikes to school last week in celebration of warmer weather. Older children rode 18 laps around the Cottrell Walking path for the equivalent of 3 miles while the younger children stayed close the building and maneuvered an obstacle course. They were a delight to watch.
Resident gardeners were pleased to finally be able to dig in the garden and sow a few seeds last week in the community garden on the south side of campus. Thanks to Aaron Coakley for tilling the ground giving gardeners fresh soil to play in. A group of volunteers including Carl Chalupa, Randy Fehr, Mike McGuire and Jana Nieman planted sweet corn as they do each year to share with residents. The little bit of rain and warmer temperatures should make for good growing conditions.
Dozens of cookies were baked in the UPH kitchen this week and shared with our Washington Community Heros. The sweet treats were delivered to the Washington County Ambulance crew, firefighters and police officers as a thank you for keeping us safe and well.
The United Presbyterian Home has many resident golf enthusiasts, but none more dedicated than Jim Lloyd. Jim was recently featured in the Gazette and Southeast Iowa Union newspapers for his love of the game that has spanned more that 76 years beginning when he was 10 years old accompanying his father to the golf course. Jim estimates that he has played over 10,000 rounds of golf mostly at the local Washington Golf and Country Club so he knows the course better than most fellow golfers. His steady play has earned him the reputation as an excellent chipper and putter. Jim has kept excellent records of every round of golf played since 1961 so he knows his average on every hole for each year. Jim has recently retired and looks forward to more time on the golf course.
