The January Art Exhibit at the United Presbyterian Home is a collection of large color plates from an old art history book. The images shown represent nearly 1,000 years of art which celebrates the life of Christ. The mosaic interior of a church in Ravenna, Italy, is the oldest ? 6th century and a painting of The Calling of St. Matthew from a church in Rome is the most recent - late 16th century. The work includes more mosaics, pages from Gospel books as well as an ornate cover, frescoes, altarpieces and painted panels from other churches. Some are smaller parts of large altarpieces. You will see many symbols which were used for many years to identify subjects. Contact Carol Ray for more information about this exhibit.
Dorothy White traveled by Amtrack to Naperville, Illinois, on Sunday to attend the funeral of her sister, Carol Tellin Wright. Carol passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home in Joliet, Illinois.
Reid Orris hosted his family at a post-Christmas dinner in the UPH Campus Center on Sunday. Reid reports that all of his children and grandchildren except one were able to attend the party. Reid?s granddaughter, Shelby lives in New York State and was not able to attend. They held a grab-bag gift exchange for entertainment where participants could steal opened gifts or pick from remaining wrapped presents. Young kids were paired up with an adult to perform the unwrapping. This brings an end to the Orrises? Christmas celebrations which means that Reid?s red plaid hat will have to go in storage until next year.
Betty Beenblossom hosted the United Presbyterian Church Circle 4 meeting Wednesday in the Campbell Room. Janice Twinam presented the Bible study program and Kay Hall gave devotions.
Kerr Hall residents gathered in the Main Dining Room for their monthly luncheon on Wednesday. Hank and Elna Tompkins were hosts for the event. The frigid weather did not deter residents from attending as they never had to step outside to enjoy a special meal in the company of friends and neighbors.
While attending a women?s basketball game at St. Ambrose University this week, Carol Greiner happened to meet a gentleman seated behind her by the name of Dean Henderson. It turns out that Dean is the brother of UPH resident Dave Henderson. Dean now lives in Muscatine, but graduated from Washington High School. Dean shared many names of classmates and friends from the Washington area and said to tell them all hello.
Dick Colby?s Classics Et Cetera program for Jan.14, 2016, included the overture to ?Faust? by Ludwig Spohr; Impromptu, Op. 142, No. 2 by Franz Schubert; 3 selections from ?Candide? by Leonard Bernstein; ?To Nie Vetier? performed by The Stars of St. Petersburg; selections from ?Pineapple Poll,? music of Sir Arthur Sullivan, chosen and arranged by Sir Charles Mackerras; ?With Pleasure? fast polka by Eduard Strauss
Leonard Bernstein, probably America?s greatest and most prodigious conductor, composer, pianist and more, produced several operettas, with ?West Side Story? being the most popular. His comic operetta ?Candide? was unsuccessful at its premiere in 1956, with only 73 performances, but it has overcome that unenthusiastic reaction to win enormous popularity among major music schools because of the quality of the music and the opportunities it offers to student singers.
