Jim Bennett has packed up the model train for another year. We thank Jim and his assistant Herb Yoder for the countless hours and dedication that they gave to this project, the smiles that they put on the faces of the children who visited and the fond memories which were brought forward for the older visitors. Thanks, guys.
Classics Et Cetera for Feb. 9, included the overture to ?The Temple of Glory? by Jean-Philippe Rameau; Waltzes 1-6 from ?16 Waltzes? for piano, 4 hands by Johannes Brahms; ?Musetta?s Waltz? from ?La Bohème? by Giacomo Puccini, performed by the Canadian Brass; ?Peter and the Wolf? by Sergei Prokofiev, Basil Rathbone, narrator; ?Grande Vitesse,? Galop, by Émile Waldteufel
In 1936, Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) was commissioned by Moscow?s Children?s Theatre to compose a musical symphony to introduce children to the instruments of the orchestra. Within a few months ?Peter and the Wolf? was ready. It was a musical story promoting Soviet virtues to children such as vigilance, bravery and resourcefulness, and illustrated Soviet themes such as the stubbornness of the un-Bolshevik older generation (the grandfather) and the triumph of Man (Peter) over Nature (the wolf). For us in the ?West? it merely tells a delightful tale for children and adults alike.
