UP Home residents enjoy nutrition program
Mar. 9, 2022 1:38 pm
With the end of February and beginning of March, we find ourselves on Campus staying informed, giving and grateful. Our early morning Breakfast Club is meeting again in the Main Dining Room. Our Thursday Morning Strollers have continued to roll along through the season with a dedicated group of residents. We also enjoyed a presentation by the ISU Extension of ‘Fresh Conversations’ which is a free nutrition and physical education program for ages 60+.
The program offers practical tips and sensible solutions to everyday problems that get in the way of doing what most people want to do: eat well and live well! Washington Police Chief, Jim Lester, came and gave a presentation on scams and internet safety. We had approximately 40 people in attendance. There was a lot of good information shared and how we can work to protect ourselves on the internet.
We’ve also begun a clean eating challenge beginning in March as March is Nutrition month. We also enjoyed a Pancake Day at the Main Dining Room on Tuesday March 1 with pancakes, sausage and bacon. Ash Wednesday was observed on March 2 and World Day of Prayer was observed with a service lead by Andrew Zuehlke. Officer Kephart and K-9 Dex, were on campus March 9 giving their presentation.
Our giving character continues with our ‘Birthday Jar’. Residents put money in a jar at our monthly Campus meetings instead of exchanging Birthday Cards. This money is then used to give to an individual at the Health Center who may be in need of an item or items and not able to purchase it. We had a special ‘Birthday Jar’ event in March with the giving of a Quilt which was made by the ladies of the United Presbyterian Church.
Money was raised with the Quilt and Marty Young donated the Quilt to a resident at the Health Center. We also put out a call to our sewers on Campus as we were in need of walker bags and the first of the sewers to come to the front were, Charlotte Magdefrau and Mary Sue Northup. Thank you, ladies! We would like to acknowledge all of our residents for their giving!
Residents in the Health Center are ready for the change in seasons as well. Residents enjoyed making biscuits, Rice Krispie treats with added M&Ms and frosting cookies, but the eating of these seem to be enjoyed as much as the making of them. Morning social time group with donuts, coffee and hot chocolate is one of the ways the day is started in Brownlee and Garrett. A reminisce group was held with good snacks from the kitchen. Bingo, Bible Study and Hymn Sing continued to be enjoyed by the group.
We are also keeping Tonnie Crile and his family in our thoughts and prayers at this time following his accident.
We would like to extend our sympathies to the family of Jean Wells.
Enjoy your week everyone!
