What a change in weather we have enjoyed on campus here at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington! It is great to be able to enjoy all the blooming flowers, bushes and trees. Residents have begun outside projects getting yards picked up of leaves, sticks and other winter debris and ready to enjoy the month of May.
With the beginning of May, May Baskets were spread around the campus by our own UP with Kids Day Care. The enjoyment of making the baskets and sharing them with others brought smiles to the Day Care Kids and much delight to the residents that received them.
We were able to enjoy Cinco de Mayo with a great meal prepared by the UP Kitchen. There was a great turn out in the Main Dining Room. Thank you to Wellness and the Kitchen Staff for making it so enjoyable. It has also been told that some great games of Cinco de Mayo Bingo took place after dinner.
Mothers’ Day Dinner was enjoyed by families on Sunday and a Mothers’ Day Tea took place on Monday in the Dining Room.
We had the Iowa Wesley College Choir performed for us with our own Jeremiah Carter, who was the Music Student of the Year. The Choir was on tour in Southeast Iowa and was nice enough, with the encouragement of Jeremiah, to make a stop at the UP Home Campus. It was a wonderful concert enjoyed by all who attended.
John and Marty Young have enjoyed recent visits from her brothers and their wives in recent weeks. Martin and Barb Chebahar from Des Moines and Mike and Cathy Chebahar from Colorado Springs have enjoyed lunch and touring the UP Home and City of Washington after residing elsewhere for many years.
The Book Club met to discuss the Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. Marcia Wilson led the discussion which was quite lively because everyone had liked the book and had a lot to say about the complex story. Present also were: Esther Bordwell, Lila DePenning, Judy Venske, Jane Fehr, Ollie Ann Bohannan, Mary Oviatt, and Carol Ray. A main topic was the plight of disabled people then and now and how Washington county has been a leader in providing education, jobs, and care to them and their families.
Book Club will meet Wednesday, May 25th to discuss Saving My Assassin by Virginia Prodan. This is the story of a woman who grew up during the terrible times of the dictator, Nicolae Ceaucescu, in Romania. She survives a cruel childhood to become an attorney, then eventually defends Christian congregations against the government, putting herself in great danger. It is a harrowing story of a woman of great faith.
In Brownlee and Garrett Cinco De Mayo was also celebrated. Trivia and Social Time took place along with fun foods and drinks. Fun Fettii Cupcakes where made, and then frosted much to the delight to everyone who took part. A scavenger hunt took place with wheel chair rides. It was nice to be able to get outside and enjoy the summer like weather for a change. Communion was provided by the UP Church this month. Hymn Sing with Andrew continues to be a favorite as well.
Enjoy your week everyone!
