Summer is here and the second half of the year has begun. We have survived the heat waves and things are still looking beautiful around campus here at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, which we would like to give many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who help with all the extras to keep everything looking that way!
We have been enjoying having the ISU Extension Office presenting “Fresh Conversations“ which is a free nutritional and physical educational program for ages 60+. This group meets on Thursdays in the Campbell Room.
Our own Wayne Brock played the first two songs on a Thursday Night for the Washington Municipal Band Concert. Wayne played in the band for 75 years. Wayne is 91 years young. Congratulations on your 75 years in the Band Wayne!
Betty Flynn and Pat Bagley were the Hostesses for the July Kerr Dinner. The group of approximately 16 enjoyed a meal of fresh fruit, meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, carrots, Chicken Caesar Salad, and Cherry Pie with Ice Cream for dessert. A nice time was had by all who attended.
We want to congratulate resident Pat Bagley on her painting exhibit at Art Domestique this month. Pat has been in the Art Class for many years and has developed her own unique style. The hours for the exhibit are Wednesday — Friday, 10 am — 4 pm, or by appointment. Congratulations Pat on your exhibit.
We would like to thank Randy Fehr and Dick Wehr for arranging to have the Corn Country Cruisers Car Club on campus. It is being held July 13th in front of the Brownlee Center for all to enjoy. Thank you, gentleman, for making a fun evening for us all.
Our Book Club meet in the month of June reviewing the book “Miss Julia Makes Up Her Mind’ — a good example of traditional Southern humor telling the story of Miss Julia’s discoveries after she becomes a widow. The cast of characters is a good cross-section of the inhabitants of a Southern town. The Book Club’s July book for review is ‘Maid’ by Stephanie Land, a memoir of fighting poverty, working a low-paying, often demeaning job and being a single mother in the early 21st century.
The Log Cabin Quester Club met with our own Dorothy Koehler on Thursday afternoon. Dorothy presented the program entitled “What’s in a Name.” She gave a brief overview of the names of the more than 100 Quester Chapters in Iowa. Following the program, food and fellowship was enjoyed.
In Brownlee and Garrett, the residents have been enjoying the beautiful weather and the opportunity to go on golf cart rides around campus. The 4th of July saw a trivia review and some red, white and blue freedom pops were enjoyed. The movie ‘The Reluctant Astronaut’ with Don Knotts was enjoyed by the group with lots of laughs. Manicures were enjoyed and always looked forward to. Root Beer floats were enjoyed bringing back lots of memories of younger days.
We would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of James Moeller, Pat Smith and Harvey Holden.
We want to acknowledge some special Wedding Anniversaries on Campus which include Dean and Shirley Garrett, 72 years on July 23rd!! Also, Max and Jean Cousins will celebrate their 66th Wedding Anniversary on July 29th. Congratulations to you all!
We also would like to acknowledge our July Birthdays which include Dick Quayle, Martha Young, Paulette Salladay, Mary Shettler, Patricia DeSotel, John Minneman, Sue Kretzschmar, Sarah Weaver, Connie Bauer, Marjorie Lins, Tonnie Crile, Betty Lowry, Norman Thomas, Dale Richards, Clarence Brown, Jim Smith and Geraldine Sproule.
Enjoy your week everyone!
