BONAPARTE ? To salute the brave men and women who served during World War II, an encore performance of a USO Show is set Saturday and Sunday in Bonaparte.
The USO Show will feature songs of the Andrew Sisters, Judy Garland, Ella Mae Morse, Frances Langford, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Big Band music will be danced to by the USO Dancers. Old skits lead by Bob Hope, Prof. Jerry Colonna, Lucille Ball and Frances Langford will be performed. Even Mammy Yokum will come to life right out of the comic strips.
The show was performed two years ago and was requested to be brought back to the 1938 WPA stage at the Addie May Fudge Factory in Bonaparte.
The USO was founded by President Franklin Roosevelt. Between 1940 and 1944, U.S. troops grew from 50,000 to 12 million. USO facilities were quickly opened and enhanced the morale of the troops by letting them know that America cared, remembered and supported servicemen around the world.
USO Camp Shows from 1941 to 1947, presented 428,521 performances. Sometimes more than 700 performances were given each day all over the world. More than 7,000 entertainers, traveled overseas. By the end of WWII more than 1.5 million volunteers had worked at the USOs.
The selling of War Bonds was important, also. Dorothy La Moure was the ?Bond Bombshell.? She will once again be selling them at the show. She is credited with selling $300 million in War Bonds.
Like the USO, a meal will be served.
Uncle Sam WANTS YOU to reserve your seats by calling 319-592-3139. Seats are limited on these two command performances sponsored by Captain Wally?s Dinner Theater.
