A Little Free Library has come to Washington. It is located just outside of the entrance to Goodwill. Anyone can take a book. There is no cost, no signup and no due date.
The Washington branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is sponsoring the box. AAUW member Virginia Bordwell registered the library with the worldwide Little Free Library Association. Washington's registration number is 20,029. AAUW member Julia Gamon initiated the project.
Charlie Thompson and Nick Evanovich donated the labor and most of the materials to make the unit, which is 32 by 18 inches. They found ideas for its construction on the Internet.
The library is an attractive gold color with two shelves and a cedar roof and slats. Marde and Joe McConnell did much of the painting and installation, with help from Marj Lins and Dale Haifley.
Debbie Stanton of the Washington Free Public Library and Courtney Glasgow of Goodwill were very supportive.
This is the first Little Free Library in Washington. The Boy Scouts of Riverside are planning as an Eagle project to establish five units. In many communities the libraries are in a homeowner's front yard. They come in all sizes and colors.
The members of AAUW hope that both children and adults will see fit to "Take a book, leave a book."
