About 50 volunteers worked together nearly two hours Sunday in Fairfield and packed 11,100 meals for Kids Against Hunger, a food relief organization with a global aim to feed the hungry.
Since May 2010, volunteers in Fairfield have packed 45,762 meals for Kids Against Hunger at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The Fairfield church is designated as an official southeast Iowa ?wing unit? with headquarters and a warehouse in Brighton.
Kids Against Hunger is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, food relief organization, incorporated in 1999. It is not affiliated with or restricted to a particular religious group and does not discriminate on any basis when distributing its meals, according to information at its website www.kidsagainsthunger.com.
Workers on Sunday afternoon included volunteers from the Presbyterian Church, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant.
Volunteers were fortified with lots of cake, cookies, brownies and snacks as well as 16 pizzas, courtesy of Clay at Pizza Hut.
?Thanks to First National Bank employees and customers for their ?Jeans Friday? contribution,? said Don Henderson a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Kids Against Hunger volunteer. ?And the Presbyterian Youth Group for its generous donation and help.
?Our goal on Sunday was to package 10,000 meals, and we surpassed that.?
Organizations pay 25-cents per meal ? a highly nutritious, vitamin fortified soy-rice casserole ? and package them at numerous locations within the U.S. and Canada. Meals are distributed to starving children and families in more than 60 countries and across the U.S.
Tax-deductible donations are accepted at: Kids Against Hunger Liberty Ministries, 3244 160th St., Brighton, 52540.
