The Senior Medicare Patrol Program, funded by the Administration on Aging and facilitated by the Milestones Area Agency on Aging, is seeking volunteers.
The SMP volunteers are mostly retired people who are trained to empower seniors to protect their personal information; detect healthcare errors, fraud and abuse; and report it.
Volunteers share information on scams and identity theft schemes through public awareness and small group presentations. They talk to groups, set up and host exhibits at health fairs and are information liaisons to senior nutrition centers and civic groups.
Background checks are required of all volunteers. Training is provided along with monthly updates. Any one interested in voluntering can call Milestones Area Agency on Aging at 855-410-6222 and ask for the Ottumwa SMP coordinator.
