WACO HS student Zoey Dennler attends Girls State

Zoey Dennler, daughter of Darren and Karen Dennler of Crawfordsville and a Junior this past year at WACO High School recently represented Elgin Legion Auxiliary Unit #352 at the 2023 Session of the American Legion Auxiliary Iowa Girls State at Drake University June 18-23. Zoey has been a youth member of Elgin's unit since 2008. Her aunt, Lou Dennler of Elgin, a member since 1984, always has made sure Zoey remained part of the auxiliary and understood its significance.
Zoey has a strong family tie to the military. Her dad served 22 years in the Army and the Iowa National Guard, including two tours in the Middle East. Both of her grandfathers, William Dennler and Martin O'Donnell served in the U.S. Army. She also has five maternal uncles and aunts that have served in the Army, as well.
Iowa Girls State was started over 75 years ago. It is a "learning by doing" program, which takes the girls through the entire political process. During the week, the American Legion Auxiliary President speaks about the various Auxiliary programs and there are several other speakers on a variety of subjects. There are activities throughout the week such as daily flag raising and lowering
Zoey was elected to the Senate and was Senate President. Darren and Karen attended the Inauguration ceremony, at which Zoey emceed part of it. There are 200 girls that attend Girls State.
Congratulations, Zoey! Everyone is proud of all your accomplishments! You excel in school, 4-H and whatever you do!!
WEDNESDAY STUDY CLUB
Five members of the Crawfordsville Wednesday Study Club met Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Marr Park in Ainsworth. Present were Ruth Erwin, Debbie Lowe, Pauline Richardson, Janice Twinam and Cathy Williams.
Members answered roll call by telling how many National Parks they had visited. Everyone enjoyed hearing about each other's visits.
Debbie presented a program on United States National Parks, including a quiz, "How well do you know the United States National Parks?" and a "National Parks IQ test" and other interesting trivia.
Following the program, a sack lunch picnic was enjoyed while sharing book briefs.
A sign-up sheet for hostessing was passed around for the 2023-2024 year, beginning in September 2023.
The club's next meeting is in September.
