Several second- and third-grade WACO students learned and worked as Engineers on Fridy, March 10, through their +1 elective class for STEM presented by Washington County Extension/4-H.
This semester 4-H/Youth Coordinator Amy Green is inspiring engineers through the hands-on learning on WACO?s +1 days. This Best of Bugs: Designing Hand Pollinators unit started with students learning new terms regarding pollination and dissecting flowers to identify key parts for pollinating. In the weeks to come, they will be designing and building their own hand pollinators for a variety of flower structures.
Amy Green planned the lessons using Engineering is elementary curriculum and was impressed and entertained with the participants? ideas, enthusiasm, experiences and how they applied that to their activity.
This engineering class is similar to other day camps which will be offered during the summer through Extension?s Clover University day camps. These engineering units are also available for check out to other youth groups, teachers and learning communities. For more information on camps or other science opportunities for youth, contact Amy at the Washington County Extension Office at 319-653-4811.
