WAYLAND ? The WACO volleyball team fought valiantly against the eighth ranked Holy Trinity Crusaders on Tuesday night, even leading the third set for most of the game, but the Warriors were unable to avoid the sweep, falling 25-4, 25-17 and 25-21.
A couple of big serving streaks for HTC in the first set led to an easy Crusader win. The Warriors kept the second set closer, but it was the third set where WACO showed they could hang with the best teams in the area.
The Warriors jumped out to a quick 10-5 lead and stretched the lead to 16-14 thanks in part to a three-point serving streak from Mayme Hinh and kills by Taylor Roth and Kiana Miller.
Despite kills from Halle Kissell, Molly Edgar and Hinh, the Crusaders were able to grind out enough points to tie the game at 20-20.
Then, after an HTC mistake made it 21-20 WACO lead, the Crusaders scored the last five points of the game to escape the third set with a 25-21 win.
Hinh led the team offensively with seven kills in 17 attempts. Kristen Conley had three kills, and Edgar, Miller and Roth had two kills apiece.
Kissell finished the game with 12 assists and one kill. McKenna White led with 11 digs, and Hinh followed White with 10 kills of her own.
The Warriors had a serve efficiency of .878 on the day, including three aces. Hinh, Kissell and Miller each had one ace in the loss.
WACO fell to 6-3 with the loss and will have another tough matchup tonight (Thursday), when they hit the road to face No. 7 New London in a Henry County showdown. That game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
