The Alzheimer?s Association invites Southeast Iowa residents to participate in the Alzheimer?s Association Walk to End Alzheimer?s on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Port of Burlington, in Burlington.
?The Walk to End Alzheimer?s will take place with the support from the surrounding communities who help raise funds and awareness for those who are living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia and their families and care partners...We want those in the community to know that you are not alone when facing Alzheimer?s or dementia, we are here to help,? says Michelle Kelman, Senior Program and Event Coordinator for the Alzheimer?s Association.
Check-in begins at 9 a.m., with the walk starting at 10:30 a.m.
In addition to the 2.3 mile walk, participants will enjoy a special tribute for those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer?s, have an opportunity to bid on and win Silent Auction Baskets, visit with special guests, enjoy children?s activities, and partake in refreshments.
Handicapped access and waiting areas are available. Well-behaved leashed pets are also welcome.
Volunteers are also needed for Walk day. Student volunteers can receive silver cord and volunteer credit. Those who are interested in volunteering should contact the Alzheimer?s Association prior to the event.
Alzheimer?s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation?s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer?s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today?s more than five million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050.
To start or join a team today, or to volunteer for event day, visit the Alzheimer?s Association at alz.org/walk.
To learn more about disease and available resources, call the toll-free Alzheimer?s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-272-3900.
