Washington Co. 4-H Winter Project Extravaganza Workshops open for registration

The goal of the Washington County 4-H Project Extravaganza days are to give 4-H members a variety of options for hands-on learning, experiencing, creating and fun with other 4-H members under leadership of community businesses, experts, and volunteers.
Depending on details of each workshop, majority are open to any 4-H members 4th grade and older. Each participant brings in their own level of experiences and is able to apply that to these project areas. Check them out and get registered today!
Online preregistration is required by November 28. Limited space is available for some workshops and filled on a first come, first serve basis. Registration links found at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/washington/ for each workshop offering. The fees for service will be used to offset direct expenses and to support the Washington County 4-H Youth Development Program.
Introduction to Welding at Kirkwood Regional Center in Washington Participants will learn about the welding lab, basic safety and weld techniques. They will create their own horse shoe snowman and rebar snowflake. Participants must be 5th -12th grade 4-H members. This workshop will held at Kirkwood Regional Center in Washington and led by a Kirkwood instructor. $40 fee. Workshop is Dec. 6 from 9 a.m.-noon.
Sewing Service Workshop: Hats for Heroes In this community service workshop youth will sew surgical caps to donate to the U of I Stead Family Children’s Hospital surgical patients. All sewing levels are welcome. Beginners will have step-by-step guide and sewing mentor to assist. Sewing machines are available to borrow if needed. Open to 4th -12th grade 4-Hers. Held at Washington County Extension Office. $5 fee. Workshop is Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. — noon.
Fresh Florals to Framed Art Participants will learn about the flower pressing and preserving process to use florals in art. Youth will practice pressing a rose to take home. They will use already pressed flowers to create a framed art design to take home. Open to 4th -12th grade 4-Hers. $30 fee will include flowers and finished framed project. Held at Wash County Ext Office. The workshop will be taught by Shelby Swift of Yarrow and Wood. Workshop is Dec. 6 from 9 a.m. — 10:30 a.m.
Auto 101: Tires to Tune-Ups Participants will get an up-close look at the inner workings of an automotive shop with a tour and live demonstrations of an oil change, tire rotation, vehicle inspections, and brake checks. This interactive experience is designed to teach youth about the importance of vehicle maintenance and the skills required to keep cars in top condition. They will learn about the mechanic career field. Open to 4th -12th grade 4-H members. This workshop will be led by and held at Capper Auto Group in Washington. $5 fee. Workshop is Dec. 6 from 10:30-noon.
Paint Winter Magic Participants will create snowman on canvas. They will learn how to get watercolor affect with acrylic paint and how to make paintings dimensional. Open to 4th-12th grade 4-H members. $30 fee. Workshop will be held Dec. 6, 1pm-3pm at GunnySac Designs in Washington.
Youth are encouraged to participate and learn through these hands-on experiences to boost knowledge and spark new project interests while having a good time, creating, and building upon skills.
