Washington County 4-H and FFA Beef Weigh-In held
N/A
Dec. 31, 2020 12:00 am, Updated: Jan. 3, 2021 11:06 am
After the Washington County Beef Weigh-in on Dec. 12, 77 Washington County 4-H'ers and FFA members have enrolled and weighed in 134 market beef animals for the 2020-2021 year.
According to Amy Green, Washington County 4-H/Youth Coordinator, others will continue to enroll through surrounding county weigh-ins held in January. If a family with market calves was not able to attend on Dec. 12, they should get in contact with the Extension Office immediately.
4-H'ers and FFA members had the option of nominating market beef for State Fair as well. Those animals nominated were weighed, tagged, and retinal scanned for identification purposes. Twenty-six calves were nominated for State Fair.
4-H beef superintendent & volunteers, 4-H & Youth Committee members, County Council members, Extension Staff and 4-H families assisted with the annual weigh-in. Thank you to those who helped with the planning, organization, and carrying out of the weigh-in successfully.
New for 2020 weigh-in, 4-Hers were challenged to complete the pre-scale form ahead of time to have their name entered in the drawing for supplies to teach and grow their beef project. Those winners included Preston Ford, Tyler Lukavsky and Nickolas Peck.
4-H families now are required to enter the market beef weigh-in data to 4-H online before Jan. 31. Contact the Extension Office, 319-653-4811, with any questions on this process or for ways on how to support the market beef project area in Washington County.
Kinley Holmes, daughter of Jared and Megan Holmes, was excited to weigh-in her first two market beef projects. Kinley is a fourth grader in her first year of 4-H. She is a member of the Limecreek Livewires. (Photo courtesy of Amy Green)
