The Washington County Freedom Rock Park in Brighton was completed last week, just in time for Memorial Day visitors. Washington's HyVee Garden Center manager Jake Engel planned and planted the flower planters as community outreach on behalf of HyVee.
'What a neat way to be a part of this project and honor our community and veterans,” added Amy Green, Freedom Rock Park committee member. 'We are excited to have nine additional brick engravings that will be done in the coming weeks as well. The support to be a part of the park has been outstanding from Brighton residents near and far.”
On June 16, 2018, the community of Brighton unveiled the Washington County Freedom Rock during the 108th annual Whoopee Days celebration. The rock is located at the corner of Hwy. 1 & 78 in Brighton (former location of BJ's Stop Off).
Painted by Freedom Rock artist Ray 'Bubba” Sorensen II, it features a variety of scenes and symbols that honor and remember Washington County's proud military background. The Washington County Freedom Rock Park has been part funded by the Washington County Riverboat Foundation.
For more information or how to honor a veteran as a part of this park, see Washington County IA Freedom Rock on Facebook.
