This year at the Iowa State Fair there were five members representing the Washington FFA chapter. Brett Wright son of Craig and Lynn Wright; McKenna Brinning, daughter of Shane and Kathleen Brinning; Macy Marek and Lexi Marek, daughters of Tim and Heather Marek exhibited swine ;and TJ Durst, son of Tim and Jennifer Durst, exhibited sheep.
The chapter had an overall fantastic year at the fair with Lexi Marek receiving Grand Champion FFA Market Hog and McKenna Brinning receiving Reserve Grand Champion FFA Market Hog. Macy Marek received Supreme Champion Purebred Breeding Gilt, Reserve Grand Champion Purebred Market Hog and Champion Purebred Spotted Market Gilt. Lexi Marek and McKenna Brinning?s champion and reserve champion pigs sold in the 4-H and FFA Sale of Champions. Lexi?s pig set a new record for any species selling for $53,000 and McKenna?s reserve champion pig sold for $32,000.
Participants in the 4-H and FFA Sale of Champions receive 80 percent of the sale price of their animals, and 20 percent of the proceeds goes to the IFAA to fund scholarships and cover sale expenses.
Featherlite Trailers also awarded Lexi with the use of an aluminum trailer for one year for winning Grand Champion Market Hog. This truly was a special year for these exhibitors as the elite level of success achieved for so many exhibitors from one FFA chapter is uncommon, to say the least.
