Washington High School comes together to celebrate American Education Week
Nov. 12, 2018 10:15 am
Every week is an educational week at Washington High School but Nov. 12-16 will be completely dedicated to celebrating education.
Principal Erik Buchholz says celebrating education week is important because it gives the students an opportunity to celebrate and thank their teachers for the hard work they put in throughout the year. Multiple clubs and groups from WHS will be participating in the week in a variety of ways.
The vocal and instrumental music departments will be putting on performances for the staff, the art club will be creating door decorations for teachers, family consumer science students will be making treats and many other clubs are participating with projects of their own.
Buchholz says that although education is always celebrated, it's important to give the teachers a whole week dedicated to them because of all the hard work they put in.
'Our staff, regardless of what department they are in, put in an incredible amount of time and energy and their own personal finances,” he said. 'They really put their heart and soul into our kids.”
He said the week allows the students the opportunity to give back and take time to realize how much their teachers do for them.
'I think that it's an opportunity that stands out,” he said. 'Like adults, kids get busy and just kind of get going in life ... this is just one of those opportunities to recognize them.”
Agricultural education teacher Trent Steinhart will be setting up games with the FFA during the lunch hour all week. Steinhart said in addition to supporting teachers, the week supports education and gives the students a chance to try new things and experience new clubs.
The FFA will be setting up a variety of contests including food science tests where they will feature name-brand mac' n' cheese and store-brand to see if kids can tell the difference. He said this week creates fun avenues for kids to travel down that also offer a chance to experience clubs they can join and learn something in the process.
'Having a week for the students to see all the different offerings within the high school education realm, I think, develops an interest in students to take classes they many not have been planning on taking,” he said. 'To me, celebrating (American Education Week) is getting students excited about their education and being lifelong learners.”
