Washington hosts 12th annual Spring Preview Cattle Show

Washington County 4-H County Council sponsored its 12th annual Washington County Spring Preview Cattle Show on Saturday, April 24. It was an Iowa Junior Beef Breeds Association sanctioned show held at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Eighty youth with 104 calves from Washington County and across the state participated.
The award for grand champion market animal went to a Washington County 4-Her, Brynn Younge of Wellman with crossbred steer. Younge won a $250 cash prize. Reserve champion market steer went to Ellie Neil with a chi steer. Neil won a $150 cash prize.
In the breeding division, supreme champion breeding heifer went to Rylee Short from Masonville with a Chi heifer, winning $250. Reserve champion breeding heifer went to Lauren Phillips of Centerville with an Angus heifer, winning $150.
Thirty-two Washington County exhibitors participated in the show, with several of them earning top honors.
Breeding Heifer Champions: Elijah Statler: Lowline, Braydon Clough: Saler, Emma Lyle: Simmental.
Breeding Heifer Reserve Champions: Kinley Holmes: Angus, Connor Shalla: Charolais Composite, Lauren Lukavsky: Chianina, Elijah Statler: Mini Hereford, Izzy Peterson: Saler, Rena Lyle: Foundation Simmental.
Market Beef Champions: Avery Shalla: Maine Anjou and 5th overall champion, Graci Hershberger: Mini Hereford, Connor Shalla: Shorthorn Plus, Brynn Younge: Crossbred and grand champion.
Market Beef Reserve Champions: Natalie West: Shorthorn Plus, Preston Ford: Simmental, Avery Shalla: Crossbred and third overall champion.
The cattle show was planned by the Washington County 4-H County Council with the help of the 4-H Youth Committee and beef department. Youth volunteers assisted with set-up, check-in, show support and clean up. Proceeds from the event go towards 4-H programming and fairground improvement projects. The event was made possible by the support of local businesses and families.
