The Washington, Iowa Knights of Columbus (K of C) hosted a ‘package food for the hungry’ event on Wednesday, October 8. The K of C coordinated this effort with Take Away Hunger located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and prepared over 15,000 meals which are expected to be sent to Haiti.
The cost for the program of approximately $4,500 was funded by private donations and contributions from the Washington and Fairfield K of C Councils.
“This is the second year the Washington Council hosted this event,” said Dave Capper, Grand Knight for the Washington Council. “It’s been a real success in bringing our local community together in support of our needy throughout the world. Take Away Hunger enables us to identify this need in our world and arranges transportation and distribution to those communities. It’s also wonderful that the K of C Councils in our District 52 can work with us from both a financial and manpower perspective enabling the expansion of the program. We expect to continue and grow this effort in the future.”
About 60 men, women and children showed up from Washington and surrounding communities to help with the preparation, packaging and shipment of the meals.
