This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded Washington Public Library a $500 grant to support summer literacy. This local grant award is part of over $7.1 million in grants awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.
?We are very excited to use this grant to extend reading incentives through the full summer,? said Library Director Debbie Stanton. ?We want to do everything we can to limit the reading achievement gaps that can widen over summer vacation.?
The library will be offering an extension of the take-home reading log portion of the Summer Reading program, which traditionally has been restricted to the month of June, and will be working with the Washington Community School District on offering active reading sessions during summer school.
