Apr. 20, 2023 10:04 am
The Wayland Lions Club held their April 18, 2023, meeting at “Your Choice Restaurant.” There were 13 members in attendance.
Lion Brian Pattyson called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Invocation was given by Lion Roger Roth, blessing those attending the meeting and the meal.
Lion Secretary Bill Grimm gave the minutes from the last meeting and Treasurer Terry Kaufman gave the Treasurer’s Report. Both were accepted unanimously.
The meeting resumed after the meal.
Old Business:
• The successful Easter Egg Hunt was attended by 90 children.
• Terry Kaufman reported that the WACO Ag Class placed 5th on their discussion of Culling of Turkeys for Avian Flu in the Iowa Contest.
• Collection of used eyeglasses were discussed including the use of the eyeglass cases for “Kindness Kits.” “Kindness Kits” would contain items for First Aid Kits like 4 Band-Aids, contact information, 2 salve packets, etc. or a Senior Kit containing a pen, pad of paper with Lions Club name, pencil sharpener, etc. These items would be handed out as part of a promotion for a Community Service project.
New Business:
• Stan Meyer will be coordinating with the Economic Development Committee to order two hogs for July 4th Pancake Fund Raiser.
• Wayland Lions Club had eight applicants for two $500 Scholarships. Katie Leichty and Noah Rich were chosen to receive this year’s $500 Scholarships.
• Melvin Jones Fellowship Award was awarded to Lion Terry Kaufman and the 4 Warren Coleman Award recipients were awarded to Lions Gwen DeVaul, Ron Marsh, Jay Meyer and Bill Grimm. These awards are testimony to the individuals’ many contributions serving the Wayland communities.
• The Wayland Lions Club American Flag Program has a total of 129 families or businesses participating.
• The Wayland Lions Club was Chartered 65 years ago on April 10, 1958. The Lion members were asked to submit their ideas for a Service Project at the July Meeting. The Celebration will be held in October so it won’t conflict with planting and harvesting activities. The date and service project will be announced at a future meeting after the July discussion.
