The Wayland Lions Club held their February meeting at the Wayland Community Center. There were 13 members and one guest, 2nd Vice District Governor Nancy Love.
President Randy Morrow opened the meeting and lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Lion Bob Meyer gave the Invocation.
The meeting resumed after a delicious meal prepared by Caterer Alice Hochstetler.
Secretary Bill Grimm read the minutes from the January 21, 2020 meeting; then Treasurer Terry Kaufman presented the Treasure's Report and both reports were approved.
President Randy Morrow introduced 2nd Vice District Governor Nancy Love, who attended this Wayland Lions Club meeting for a special presentation to Lion Tim Egli for his 15 years of dedicated service to Wayland and its local communities.
VDG Nancy Loved read a letter of commendation from Lions Clubs International President Dr. Jung-Yul Choi and presented the prestigious 15 Year Service Chevron to Lion Tim Egli.
Tim Is proprietor of Egli Landscapes and credited the late Lion John Swartzendruber for sponsoring him to become a member of the Wayland Lions Club. Tim has been Wayland Lions President; as well as, holding other officer positions in the Wayland Lions Club. Tim credited John with introducing him to the management skills acquired as a Lion that has enabled him to hold officer positions in many different organizations today.
Secretary Bill Grimm informed the members of the 2020 Canada/USA Lions meeting in Louisville, KY from September 17-19, 2020. Members were encouraged to consider the opportunity of attending.
At the January meeting, Secretary Bill Grimm had President Kent Peterson and Lion Mike Quinlan present their American Flag Program of the West Branch Lions Club, used to raise money for their charities in West Branch. The program involves setting up American Flags for their town's participants on 5 National Holidays during the year.
A participant would purchase the plan for $35 and renew their membership each year for $35. A receptacle is placed in the ground to receive the American Flag before the Holiday and to be retrieved a few days later, to be stored for the next holiday in a central location. A cap is placed in the receptacle to keep flush to the ground for mowing. Their response to the program has been amazing and the rows of American Flags is a breathtaking show of patriotism.
The Wayland Lions Club voted and approved starting their own American Flag Program, starting with this year's Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020. Final details will be concluded at the Wayland Lions Club meeting on March 17, 2020. If you are interested in becoming a Charter Member of this program, present a check for $35 to Terry Kaufman @ Peoples Bank or attention of President Randy Morrow @ City Hall. The check should be made out to the Wayland Lions Club and attention American Flag Program in check Memo section.
Lion Brian Pattyson gave an update on the Henry County Freedom Rock, which will be located in Winfield. A July 11, 2020 Tour will be made through the 13 cities/towns of Henry County led by a police escort, motorcycles, trucks and cars. You may be familiar with the Washington Freedom Rock, which is located in Brighton on Route 1; Henry County Freedom Rock will be similar, depicting painting of heroes and events chosen by the artist from history & your submissions.
As previously noted, the plan is to have the final Freedom Rock placement and painting in early fall. The Tour will provide some of the cost by participation fees, but grants, personal donations, purchase of etched pavers and other activities are planned to cover the entire cost of the project. Look for updates in future Henry County Freedom Rock articles.
Lion Gwen DeVaul informed the members that the meal for the WACO High School Dinner and Theater will put on by the WACO Drama Club in March, rather than the Wayland Lions Club; as previously planned.
