Wayland Lions November meeting minutes
N/A
Nov. 26, 2018 9:40 am
The Wayland Lions Club held their November meeting at the Wayland Community Center. There were 12 members present and one guest.
President Bill Grimm called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert Meyer gave the Invocation. The meeting broke for a delicious dinner catered by Alice Hochstetler.
At the resumption of the meeting, Brian Pattyson read the minutes of the last two meeting. Terry Kaufman gave the treasurer's report. Both were approved.
Old Business:
President Grimm asked Brian to report on the Alpaca Fall Fest held at Apple Blossom Alpaca Ranch on Nov. 3. Although the rain and cold shortened the six-hour event to three hours, a substantial donation was earned for the Iowa Lions Foundation from 75-plus attendees. In addition, a donation was made to the Wayland Lions Club for sponsoring the event.
Brian also discussed the Iowa Leo Convention held in Urbandale, which was attended by 25-plus Leo Members from Leo Clubs throughout the state; as well as, District Governors and other Iowa Lion personnel. The keynote speaker was Kerry J. Green of the Lions Advisory Council. The Leos gave a PowerPoint Presentation of the services they bring to their communities. State Representative Joe Mitchell was a special guest and related his experience as a WACO Leo and now a Wayland Lions Club member. Joe's message was serving one's community enhances self-development and there is no limit to what you can accomplish with the talents you possess.
Brian mentioned that a new Lions Club would be chartered in Tiffin on Feb. 9, and District 9SE invites all Lions to attend.
President Bill Grimm reviewed the 60th Anniversary Dinner held on Oct. 16, and the wonderful comments received.
Stan Meyer reported that 135 dozen roses were sold and delivered in September. The proceeds will be used for future community service events. Stan encouraged more participation by members next year to increase the funds available for service projects. Inclusion of WACO High School students and staff was suggested for next year.
Ron Marsh was asked to share his experience in Washington, D.C. as a participant in the Honor Flight from Cedar Rapids, to honor the sacrifice that deceased servicemen and service women gave to this country to protect citizens and the American way of life. Ron describes his experience and emotion as he visited the WWII, Korean and Vietnam tributes and recommended the trip to all former servicemen and service women.
New Business:
Sponsor Ron Marsh brought Bruce Eichelberger forward to be inducted as a new member of the Wayland Lions Club. Bruce was inducted and given his Lions membership pin and Ron Marsh was awarded a Sponsorship Certificate.
Ron Marsh was also awarded the International Presidents Certificate of Appreciation, signed by International President Gudrun Yngvadottir.
Carol Shumaker was awarded her 20-Year Lions Service Chevron.
President Grimm asked for suggestions for projects for the future. The Soup Supper was suggested as a possibility, but was tabled until the January meeting.
Dec. 18 will be the Wayland Lions Club Christmas Party.
The official meeting ended at 8 p.m.
