The Wayland Lions Club held its January meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Wayland Community Center.

The Wayland Lions Club held its January meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Wayland Community Center.
Former President Marianne Pattyson called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Bob Pusey gave the invocation, and then the meeting was adjourned for a delicious meal catered by Alice Hostetler.
When the meeting was called back to order, Terry Kaufman gave the treasurer's report and Secretary Carol Shumaker gave the minutes, which were approved.
Carol Shumaker read an appreciation letter from Lions Clubs International for the donation by the Wayland Lions Club, which will be used for various projects during the year ? "We Serve!"
Jay Meyer will be setting up a date to give the annual Kidsight program in Crawfordsville Elementary School. The Kidsight program combats vision problems through early detection of abnormalities discovered through photography with a special camera. When potential abnormality is detected, the student will have his or her physician examine the film to determine if a corrective procedure is required.
Bob Meyer will be working with Randy Fehr to schedule the Wayland Lions Club March meeting at Kirkwood Community College in Washington.
Global Membership Coordinator, Brian Pattyson gave an overview of the Lions Iowa Mid-Winter Leadership Conference held at the Holiday Airport Inn in Des Moines. The event was attended by 400 Iowa Lions and featured keynote speaker Joe Preston, president of Lions Clubs International. He called for continued growth of Lions Clubs International so Lions will be able to serve more people in America and internationally.
International President Preston congratulated Leo member Ahmi Dhuna of the Burlington Leos for being chosen International Leo of the Year and presented Ahmi with a medal and certificate, acknowledging her achievement. Leo Ahmi Dhuma will be featured on the cover of Lions Clubs International publication along with an interview article.
International Lions specialist Paul Baker gave two informational clinics on becoming Guiding Lions and New Lions Club acquisition.
Lion Brian Pattyson informed the attending 13 members that the Iowa Lions were looking for candidates for the Great Plains Lions Leadership Institute to be held July 24-26, at Jamestown University in North Dakota. The course provides emerging Lion leaders with modules on communication skills, team building, delegation, management of change, conflict management, project management, diversity, time management, motivation, goal setting/action plans and leading effective meetings.
The Iowa Lions District 9SE Convention will be held April 10-11, in Oskaloosa. Wayland Lions were encouraged to attend and take advantage of several informative clinics and seminars.
The formal meeting was adjourned and Lion Bob Meyer was the guest speaker. He gave an informative presentation on economic and political forecasting. Each attending member was given a test on the forecasting to complete and sign. Results will be given on the accuracy of everyone's predictions by year?s end.
