Wolves lose close one

WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union football team held a six-point lead early in the third quarter on Friday night, but Montezuma closed the game out on a 20-0 run, and the Wolves had to settle for a 34-20 loss.

The game was moved to Winfield because of heavy storm possibilities in Montezuma, giving the Wolves an extra home game on the schedule. W-MU capitalized on the home field advantage early on, striking first on a 38-yard touchdonwn pass from Daunte Oepping to Jacob Ford. The two-point try was no good but the Wolves led 6-0.

Montezuma scored two times before the first quarter was over. The Braves took the lead with a three-yard rushing touchdown and a successful PAT, and then brought the score to 14-6 after a 52-yard punt return touchdown.

Oepping found Christian Gerot on a 37-yard passing touchdown in the period and the Wolves trailed by just two points, at 14-12, when the halftime buzzer rang.

W-MU retook the lead early in the third quarter when Gerot caught a seven-yard touchdown pass. Ford converted the two-point converstion on the ground, and the Wolves led 20-14.

Unfortunately for the home fans, the Braves scored the next three touchdowns to sink the Wolves.

Oepping was 14-20 passing the ball with three touchdowns and two interceptions, and also led the team on the ground with 43 rushing yards. Ford had six catches for 128 yards and a score.
